Had an average day today, but realized that an average day for a rheumatologist can be pretty interesting. Among the patients, I saw:
An ankylosing spondylitis patient who developed uveitis while on etanercept. It's now a well described, but still largely inexplicable phenomenon.
A lupus patient with a completely numb left leg. Neurological investigations all negative.
A rheumatoid arthritis patient with arthritis only on the left side. He had a CVA and the paralyzed side is unaffected by the inflammation. Another well described but weird turn of events.
A patient with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy of the hand. Or you can call it by it's new name, complex regional pain syndrome. Either way, that's one odd condition.
Just being able to say Ankylosing Spondylitis on a regular basis is pretty fun. I wonder if other internal medicine specialists get to see weird and interesting things on such a regular basis.
